Cumberland Early Scholars Academy
When kids come to Cumberland Early Scholars Academy (CESA) to enroll we see lots of promise...and sometimes pain. All of them are "neat" kids, but each one is not achieving to their fullest potential. That's not unusual though. No one's life is perfect, and no one's mind is perfect.
At CESA we turn these kids in our early childhood program or in our full-time program into students who are confident, happy, and ultimately fully successful.
We provide them with the necessary preparation for school success, social and emotional competence, and improved opportunities for healthy living. All of our programs provide developmentally appropriate learning curriculum and teaching styles which are responsive to the age and individual differences of each student.
Educational Program
Cumberland Early Scholars Academy is focused on providing the student with the necessary preparation for school success. We follow a path that has been developed by Dr. Mel Levine, a developmental pediatrician, and his colleagues at the University of North Carolina. It provides us with a comprehensive framework for understanding how kids learn.
The program is staffed with certified teachers and individuals who have specialized preparation for teaching children. It provides for small group sizes and appropriate teacher to student relations which promote optimal development. The program establishes close ties between families and ensures that all of the student's needs are met by helping families gain access. if needed, to comprehensive services such as Vision Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy.
Educational Resources
Christy Harrison, CESA Principal and Director of our Sylvan Learning Center publish semi-monthly articles in the Cookeville Herald Citizen. These articles share information for understanding diverse learning styles and the best available practices for identifying and addressing the unique need of every child.
The purpose of the Community Education Program at CESA is to share professional resources and talents within our Upper Cumberland region. We seek to establish a better understanding of the diverse needs and strengths of students with learning differences.
There is also a growing recognition that the need to understand educational difference is a family matter. CESA staff conducts in-service sessions at other schools and offers practical experiences for university students. CESA periodically sponsors free community seminars for parents and other interested individuals on such topics as Child Discipline, Central Auditory Processing Disorder, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
