Burks Middle School
 The administration, faculty, and staff welcome you to Burks Middle School. BMS is a friendly and safe place that provides students with many opportunities to develop academic skill, acquire fundamental knowledge, and will learn, grow, and have fun with people your own age while moving toward greater independence.
The vision of Burks Middle School is to educate the mind, body, and spirit of every student. Building student character through leadership, guidance, and education. Understanding the needs and differences of each middle school student. Respect ourselves and others. Kindle success with positive expectations, classroom management, and lesson mastery. Serve our school and community.
BMS is named and dedicated after longtime Tennessee state senator Tommy Burks who represented and lived just outside Monterey. Senator Burks was pro education and loved the citizens of Monterey. He will be remembered for his dedication to students, teachers, and education in general.
BMS opened its doors for classes on September 10, 2001, after many months of planning, building, and organizing. The school is 5th - 8th grades, based on a two-wing system. The 5th and 6th grades are on one wing and the 7th and 8th grades are on the other. In between are the offices, library, gym, auditorium, music room, and cafeteria. It has a softball /football practice/soccer - field. There are computer labs, science labs and a greenhouse. Also, the school contains a CDC, Behavior classroom, Teen Living Lab, and mini-testing rooms.
The classes are based on a modified block scheduling format with one schedule for 5th and 6th grade and another for 7th and 8th. Students take the usual core courses: language arts, mathematics, science and social studies, along with encore classes of various types changing at different intervals.
Students have the opportunity to obtain a great education while attending BMS. The courses are designed to increase students' understanding of the curriculum, in which,they will become better prepared for the high school years. The teachers have high expectations of the students to achieve their best at BMS.
There is also an excellent athletic program for student athletes to participate and support. BMS currently offers football, girls and boys basketball, cheerleading, golf, baseball, softball, boys soccer, and girls soccer.
Overall, BMS provides an great atmosphere for the student to achieve their utmost. The citizens of Monterey are truly blessed with a state-of-the-art school in which students are the number one priority. "Education is at its best at BMS." - J. Hoover Sept. 10, 2001
