Cookeville High School
Cookeville High School, a comprehensive educational facility serving 2,242 students in grades 9-12, opened at its present site on September 3, 1996. Staffed with 105 teachers, five school counselors, one part-time technology coordinator, and one administrator with four assistant principals, Cookeville High School is one of the largest high schools in the State of Tennessee.
The overall academic program at Cookeville High School is based on a modified 4 X 4 block scheduling plan instituted in 1995-96 which includes courses in core college preparatory, Advanced Placement, on-line Advanced Placement, technical education, elective areas, and dual credit (high school and university). Honors level courses are offered in the core curriculum areas of English, mathematics, science, history, and foreign language.
The wide variety of course offerings allows all students to complete state-mandated core graduation requirements for either the university, technical or dual high school diploma. Students who meet enrollment requirements may attend Tennessee Technological University to begin earning college credit while still in high school.
Since the 2000-2001 school year, senior students have had the option of enrolling in a Dual Credit course in cooperation with TTU for which they may receive English 12 and English 101 credit for their work first term. Those continuing with the class second term receive elective English credit and English 102 credit.
Computer technology is used in all facets of administrative and classroom programming at Cookeville High School. The Mac School computer-based management program is used to schedule classes for all grade levels, and it allows teachers to keep daily attendance records and student grades at their fingertips in all classrooms. It is also used to generate student progress reports and report cards. The system has Quick Conference capability, which allows teachers in the large building to communicate with each other, with counselors, and with administrators as necessary throughout the school day by using the computer to send and receive messages.
Additionally, the school is equipped with computer labs in the academic departments which allow students hands-on access in writing, science, mathematics, drafting, business, journalism, foreign language, music, and art labs. Students gain valuable experience using various commercial computer programs to write term papers and essays, complete general assignments, create drawings and blueprints, create Power Point and/or mPower slide shows, layout and design newspaper and yearbook pages, and calculate accounting debits and credits.
We have a very active Parent-Teacher-Student-Organization (PTSO). Parents volunteer hundreds of man-hours to help facilitate the school day. One project has been to man the visitor check-in and information desk. Other PTSO members work as volunteers in the main office as well as in the attendance office. When a teacher needs outside help with an activity, PTSO volunteers are often called. They participate in providing recognition for students and faculty for jobs well done.
