 Putnam County government is administered by an elected county executive. A 24-member commission makes up the legislative body. The City of Cookeville and the City of Algood operate under the council-manager form of municipal government. The town of Baxter and the City of Monterey operate under the mayor-council form of government.
Cookeville is a quality community experiencing accelerated growth in recent years. Our government, community organizations and citizens are taking a proactive stance to meet the challenges growth presents. To provide for the future of our children, programs such as DARE and Teens Need Training, Police Athletic League, summer day camps and others are in place.
We have recently completed the Cookeville Vision 2020 Plan, a report that outlines how this city should grow in the next 20 years. The 2020 Plan is the first comprehensive study of Cookeville's zoning ordinance and planning in 25 years. Targeted areas include government relations, transportation, quality of life, education and culture, planning and growth input, aesthetics and environment, community facilities, and economic relations.
 Cookeville is a fast growing city of approximately 26,000 people with a Council/City Manager form of government. Five (5) Council members are elected at-large for a four (4) year term. Council members elect the Mayor.
The Mayor is head of the city government for all ceremonial purposes, presiding officer of the council meetings and other official duties as described in the Cookeville City Charter.
Regular Council meetings are held at 6:00 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of each month at the Cookeville Municipal Building, 45 East Broad Street. Additional meetings and work sessions are called when necessary for public business. Everyone is encouraged to attend these meetings as it is your opportunity to be involved with the decisions affecting this city.
